BUILDING BRIDGES BETWEEN
TECHNOLOGY AND BRANDS
EN NL

THE CHAMPION

Bol.com is one of the most popular (web) shops in the Netherlands and Belgium, and is the market leader in online sales of books, entertainment products, electrical appliances and toys. More than 6.5 million customers in the Netherlands and Belgium can choose from more than 14.5 million items. Bol.com’s head office, in Utrecht, employs 1,255 professionals.

THE CHALLENGE

On a daily basis, Bol.com receives up to 200,000 images from its various suppliers. The processing of these images is extremely labour intensive as they all need to be indexed and saved with the correct and most effective metadata. A selection must then be made of the most suitable images for the website.

THE WORKOUT

In order to process and manage the enormous quantities of files it receives, Bol.com has chosen the robust elvis DAM Enterprise image bank which enables the management of up to a billion files. In addition, a user-friendly interface in combination with an open architecture and a well-documented API (development interface) were also required. Bol.com has created scripts using the API, from which automatic selections are made based on the metadata linked to the images. The images are filtered based on pre-defined criteria, significantly simplifying the selection process for the product managers. The integration of elvis DAM Enterprise and the Product Information Management system makes it possible to work with data and files in real time. This means that the processing and publication process is no longer a bottleneck to growth and ambitions. The workout consisted of:

  • analysis
  • blueprint
  • implementation

THE RESULTS

Quicker time to market
Lower process costs
Consistent brand image
Integration of data and files
